2019 Emerging Artist Award - LISTEN
It’s that time of the year again, time for our 2019 Emerging Artist Award. Registrations are now open and we are waiting with anticipation to see what amazing talent comes in for 2019.
Last year we decided to align the exhibition with mental health. We thought that maybe we had pushed the boundaries with the theme of EMPATHY. What an unbelievable response we received not only from the entries but by the entire community coming in to view the works. Some were reduced to tears, tears of relief to see that these artists were brave enough to put mental health on display. Anyone coming into the space felt safe and secure enough to start the discussion of mental health, breaking down barriers and sharing journeys.
Empathy is a key ingredient in creating successful relationships, it reduces prejudice and racism, decreases bullying, encourages us to help others, and promotes mental well-being. 10 artists created works that visually expressed empathy and it was on show and open for everyone to see.
We are so proud of that exhibition and hope that we continue to provoke discussion about mental health and support artists that join our tribe!
Last years winner Nour Hassan has continued to develop her art and went on to win other awards, Lysaght Watt Trust Award, Taranaki and Impressions National Art Award - Nelson. Nour is on her way to France after being accepted to study painting at renowned Studio Escalier in Angers, France. The 2019 Emerging Artist Award is again aligned with mental health and is themed LISTEN. We have asked artists from across Auckland to create artworks that will engage our local community in support of mental health, with messaging that counters misunderstandings, fear and prejudice.
