This body of work explores a duality in the idea of forsakenness. On its face, to be forsaken is to be abandoned and forgotten. But it may also be a totally open state of honesty in suffering. And this state can surprise with strange experiences of beauty or deep consolation. These paintings seek to connect with that duality. Stylistically, I tend to work between deliberate structure and fluid physicality. When thinking about composing images and painting, I am drawn to a quote from poet Kahlil Gibran, who writes about “an image you see though you close your eyes and a song you hear though you shut your ears”.
