Is it a pest - or a pet? The rabbit or hare can be viewed with both contempt and compassion, a concept explored in Amanda Piearcey’s new exhibition, Love and Loathing. Piearcey’s work stems from her profound passion for all creatures, born from a desire to expose the juxtaposition of emotions we direct upon this humble creature.
Each three-dimensional piece reflects the conflicting relationship we have with these animals - be that Peter Rabbit or target practice. The exhibition weaves in cultural references, spiritual and economic effects, balancing the reality of the effect rabbits have on their environment, with how we are inextricably linked with their past, present and future.
Love and Loathing utilises the mixed media skills Piearcey has gained through her career, starting out in London where she created concept models for the likes of sculptor Anish Kapoor. She worked with renowned architects, helping create the miniature beginnings of many iconic buildings that dot the landscape today.
Deciding to further her career away from the UK, she moved to New Zealand where she came to call the Waitakere hills her home and began working in the film industry. Using her skills she creates miniatures, costumes and props as well as continuing her work in architectural model making.
