Aasta Louise Otnes
Originally from Norway and now based in Auckland’s city centre, Aasta Louise Otnes works across still and moving images, printmaking, drawing, and installation. Her practice navigates the emotional undercurrents of everyday life — inviting viewers to reflect on what it means to be alive, to observe, and to imagine alternative realities.
From a young age, Aasta was drawn to storytelling. Through images and imagined narratives, she explored lives that could have been — or sought to better understand the one she lives. Her work often reflects these parallel paths: poetic, perceptive, and quietly profound.
Themes of the human condition and shifting perspectives run deep in her work. Whether through tactile prints or immersive installations, Aasta seeks to make things that we can touch — and that can touch us back. Her art isn’t just visual; it’s an intimate conversation, a shared experience, a place to pause.
As she puts it: “Life is an event and you are on stage, and this is your place.”
“Flow”, 2023 (Block print, 22 × 27 cm). A meditation on the stream of ideas — ever present, swimming toward us from the quiet edges of awareness.
