Billy Medland Parker
Billy Medland Parker is a West Auckland–born artist based in New Lynn, working primarily in acrylics.
His creative journey began in childhood, sketching native wildlife before transitioning into painting. Studies at Elam School of Fine Arts and Unitec, where he majored in Visual Arts, helped shape his distinct style.
Billy’s work explores space, perspective, and colour through layered mark-making and a process that blends surrealist free association with technical precision. Native flora such as nīkau palms and flax often appear in his pieces, inspired by his love of bush walks, fishing trips, and the volcanic landscapes of Auckland’s West Coast.
A longtime member of The Upstairs Gallery community, Billy began as a volunteer and has since become a regular exhibiting artist, drawing ongoing inspiration from its people and exhibitions.
‘Promontory’ — Acrylic on Paper, A4, 2022. A layered composition inspired by Auckland’s volcanic coastline and the sweeping geological forms that shape its promontories.
