Jago Neal

Jago Neal is a multidisciplinary artist, illustrator, and photographer originally from London, now based in West Auckland. His creative practice spans photography, collage, ceramics, painting, and drawing - with each medium chosen intuitively to express emotion, make sense of the world, and feed the imagination.

Jago’s artistic journey began in childhood, surrounded by a family of artists and photographers. He went on to complete a degree in Art and Design, specialising in Illustration and Photography, before travelling extensively and documenting his experiences through visual journals and books. Since settling in Aotearoa, his connection to the natural environment has deepened, becoming a central influence in his work.

Inspiration strikes from many sources - the lines of a mountain or a face, the light catching a leaf in the garden - and Jago allows that flow to guide his process. He currently works as the gallery manager and curator at Kumeū Arts, where collaboration and community remain at the heart of his creative life.

Liquid Light Forest, mixed media installation, 2024 — Created using hand-painted photographic emulsion, this piece reflects Jago’s love for the painterly qualities and raw aesthetic of alternative darkroom techniques. Inspired by his early experiments in a London darkroom, the work embraces serendipity and suits the rugged New Zealand landscape it seeks to evoke.
