Matt Coates

Based in Titirangi, Auckland, Matt Coates is a self-taught artist working primarily in watercolour and acrylic. His artistic journey began early, with a lifelong love of drawing and painting that evolved over time into a full creative practice. What began as quirky watercolour illustrations for fun has since grown into murals, children’s books, clothing designs, and more.

Matt’s recent shift into acrylics has brought new energy to his work. He describes the leap from watercolour on paper to thick paint on a canvas as a challenge - but a rewarding one. With both mediums now part of his practice, Matt finds each informs the other, opening up new ways of seeing and creating.

Much of Matt’s work is inspired by the native flora and fauna of Aotearoa. Living among lush bush and near the wild beaches of the West Coast, he draws inspiration from the local birds, coastal landscapes, and natural rhythms of his surroundings. His current series explores these themes with a sense of curiosity and connection to place.

What do birds see? This piece offers a unique perspective of a tūī surveying the trees at Cornwallis Beach. A playful yet thoughtful glimpse into the world above, seen through the watchful eyes of one of Aotearoa’s most iconic native birds.
